A United States citizen died while onboard an international Fiji Airways flight to San Francisco on Saturday (June 8), the airline confirmed in a statement shared on its official website Tuesday (June 11).

The 41-year-old male passenger was reported to have "encountered a medical condition" about 90 minutes into flight FJ870.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you of an incident that occurred on our flight FJ870 from Nadi to San Francisco this morning," Fiji Airways said in the statement. "A passenger, a 41-year-old male U.S. citizen, encountered a medical condition approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes prior to the aircraft's arrival at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

"Despite the best efforts of our cabin crew and a doctor on board who provided immediate assistance, the passenger unfortunately passed away."

Crew members declared a medical emergency and were given priority for landing by San Francisco International Airport authorities.

"Fiji Airways ground operations and the relevant authorities were informed in advance and were prepared to meet the aircraft upon arrival," the airline said. "The flight landed safely at San Francisco a short while ago. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time."

Fiji Airways said it "remains committed to the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew, and we are cooperating fully with the authorities as they manage this situation."
