City of Opelika Virtual Veterans Day Services

Monday, November 9, the City will host a virtual Veterans Day Services to honor our military heroes who fought for or are fighting for our country. The event can be viewed on the city’s YouTube Channel (Opelika City Gov) at 6 p.m. The link for the city’s channel can be found at www.opelika-al.gov.

Sergeant First Class Louis M. Brandwein of the United States Army Recruiting Command was born in Sanford, Fla. He graduated from Merced High School, Merced, Calif. in 2002 and immediately after attended United States Air Force at Lackland AFB, Texas. He was honorably discharged in 2007 and then enlisted into the United States Army as an Airborne Infantryman. While serving with the 1-501st Airborne, he deployed to Paktika Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and was an instrumental asset during conflict resolutions and foreign relations in the area.

SFC Brandwein’s assignments and positions include: Squad Designated Marksman with the 1-501st ABN, served as a Fire Team Leader with the 1-501st while deployed to Afghanistan in 2009, returned as a Squad Leader, PCS'd to Fort Benning assigned to the 2-29th Infantry as an AIMSS Member (Advanced Infantry Marksmanship Strategies and Standards), Instructed the Long Range Marksmanship Course assigned at the Sniper Compound in 2-29th INF, serving as an instructor/writer. He was then selected by the Department of the Army to serve as a Recruiter in August 2014 and was assigned to Torrance, Calif. where he converted to 79R one year later. He then graduated the Center Leaders Course in 2016, and is now serving his final term and retiring in Opelika, Ala.
